Warrington Borough Council reduces their carbon footprint

As a council, Warrington has shown their commitment to climate change by achieving Centre for Assessment’s Carbon Action Standard. Meeting the Standard demonstrates their commitment towards combating climate change whilst helping to meet the government's emissions targets.

Dave Watson, principal environmental health officer and lead on the council’s ‘Climate Change Strategy for Warrington’ said: “Our aim is to reduce the council’s own emissions of greenhouse gases by 10% by 2012 compared with a baseline year of 2006 and to set us on a path to reducing the community’s emissions by 20% by 2020”.

Since starting work in 2007, much has been achieved at a strategic level to establish mechanisms for reducing emissions both within the council and in the community.

Warrington Borough Council has demonstrated its commitment by formally signing up to the Nottingham Declaration as well as establishing a Climate Change Steering Group.

Dave Watson went on to say: “The assessment against the Carbon Standard was a positive experience; the independent review of our plans has helped us to identify areas for improvement and to reinforce the need to tackle climate change across the organisation.  We were confident that we were heading in the right direction but we were delighted to receive positive feedback on the commitment of our staff to making a real difference.  We would encourage others to seek recognition against the standard as a way of demonstrating their commitment to this important issue.”
