Why is ISO 42001 important?

ISO 42001 is the first global standard for managing AI systems. It lays out simple, risk-based steps for designing, running and retiring AI responsibly - making sure data is sound, decisions are transparent and new threats are controlled. Following it helps you meet rules like the EU AI Act, cuts legal and reputation risks, and proves to customers and regulators that your AI is governed properly.

Why Centre for Assessment?

ISO 42001 is a new standard and Centre for Assessment is part of a second tranche of certification bodies that are on the way to be UKAS Accredited

How does it work?

ISO 42001 is built around four core principles - risk management, governance and accountability, transparency and trustworthiness, and alignment with ethical and legal expectations - and uses a Plan-Do-Check-Act framework to ensure AI systems are developed, deployed and decommissioned under a structured, continuously improving governance model. It follows the same high-level structure as other ISO management standards (such as ISO 9001 and ISO 27001), enabling organisations to integrate AI governance into existing quality of information security management systems. The standard specifies auditable requirements for roles, responsibilities and performance metrics, and requires independent certification to validate compliance and demonstrate that best practices are being met.
