About the Jersey Law Officers’ Department
The Jersey Law Officers’ Department is headed by His Majesty’s Attorney General and His Majesty’s Solicitor General (the Crown Officers). With around 100 staff, the Department provides legal advice to the Government of Jersey, the States Assembly and the Crown, and delivers the Island’s independent public prosecution service.
Why Lexcel Matters
For the Jersey Law Officers’ Department, achieving Lexcel accreditation demonstrates a clear commitment to operating to the highest possible standards. The Lexcel framework covers seven key practice management areas, including client care, risk management, financial management, people management, and file and case management. Together, these ensure that every aspect of the Department’s work follows recognised best practice.
The Accreditation Process with Centre for Assessment
While a lot of work can be required to meet the Lexcel standard, the Jersey Law Officers’ Department found the accreditation process with CfA to be straightforward and well supported. The organisation reflected on the clear and simple application process we provided, how we arrange the assessment visit efficiently, and our co-ordination ensuring a smooth experience throughout.
The Impact of Re-Accreditation
Achieving and maintaining the Lexcel accreditation provides assurance to the Crown Officers that Jersey Law Officers Department is operating to the highest levels of best practice. The Department has seen tangible benefits, including reduced risk, motivated and engaged staff, and the consistent delivery of high‑quality, timely legal advice to client departments. Over time, Lexcel requirements have become embedded ways of working, strengthening standards across all areas of the organisation.
Leadership and Preparation for Accreditation
From the Department’s experience, strong leadership support is essential to achieving Lexcel accreditation. Senior leaders need to understand the benefits of the standard and actively support any improvements required to meet the criteria. Starting with the Lexcel self‑assessment checklist enables organisations to identify gaps early and ensure all requirements are met before applying.
A Positive Partnership
The Jersey Law Officers’ Department strongly recommends working with CfA, highlighting its deep understanding of the organisation and its ability to manage the full accreditation process, including liaison with Lexcel and the assessor.
Alec Le Sueur, Practice Director, said:
“We have had a very positive experience in gaining Lexcel accreditation through Centre for Assessment. By highlighting Areas of Good Practice and providing Suggestions for Best Practice, our assessor gives us an independent and expert view of what we can celebrate and where we can improve.”
Tracy Thompson, Lexcel Assessor, commented:
“I have been particularly impressed by how quickly the standard was embedded into day-to-day practice and the seriousness with which the department approaches continual improvement. Non-compliances are addressed proactively with meaningful remedial action implemented to reduce recurrence, while suggestions for best practice are welcomed and used constructively to strengthen operational performance further. The department’s commitment to quality and compliance is exemplary.”
